First Lady Saajidha Mohamed has stressed the importance of prioritising mental health support in humanitarian emergencies, underscoring that mental well-being is a fundamental human right, not a luxury.
In a message shared on the occasion of World Mental Health Day, the First Lady expressed solidarity with those affected by conflict, crisis, and displacement across the globe, particularly women and children, who she noted are often the most vulnerable in such circumstances.
She stated that mental health is too often overlooked during emergencies, despite being most needed in times of distress. The First Lady called for compassion, healing, and mental health care to be integral components of all emergency responses.
Observed globally on October 10, World Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness and mobilise efforts to support mental health worldwide. This year’s theme, “Mental Health in Humanitarian Emergencies,” draws attention to the psychological toll of conflicts and crises, as well as the need for accessible mental health services for affected communities.
The First Lady’s message reinforces the Maldives’ ongoing commitment to advocating for mental health awareness and ensuring that humanitarian responses include mental and emotional well-being as essential priorities.
