The Maldives has been elected as the Chair of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Asia Region for a three-year term. The decision was made during the CPA Asia Region Executive Committee meeting held in Barbados.
The Maldives will be represented by Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim, whose term as regional chair will conclude at the 71st Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference.
The country assumed the position following the end of Sri Lanka’s term. Although Bangladesh was next in line under the CPA’s rules of procedure, the nation’s current absence of an elected parliament prevented it from taking up the post. As a result, the CPA Asia Region Executive Committee convened and elected the Maldives to serve as Chair for the forthcoming term.
The Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is among the oldest and most active organisations in the Commonwealth, comprising over 180 national and regional legislatures. The CPA Asia Region includes eight legislatures, among them Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Maldives, with its regional headquarters based in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Through its platforms, the CPA provides opportunities for parliamentarians and legislative staff to collaborate on shared issues and exchange good practices aimed at strengthening parliamentary democracy across member states.
