The Maldives has received its first bulk shipment of boulders to be used in infrastructure development projects, fulfilling a pledge to accelerate stalled works across the atolls.

The shipment, totalling 56,450 tonnes, is part of efforts to import 2.5 million tonnes of boulders by the end of the year to support Public Sector Investment Programme (PSIP) projects.

The move follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Directive to prioritise the import of boulders after highlighting delays in harbour and coastal protection projects during his visits to the islands. He noted that the shortage of suitable material had been a major obstacle to progress, affecting communities waiting for much-needed infrastructure.

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), which has been tasked with implementing several PSIP projects, confirmed that the newly arrived shipment will first be allocated to harbour development works in Baa Maalhos with Baa, Raa and Lhaviyani atolls to receive the material too.

MTCC, established in 1980, has been a central player in the country’s infrastructure development over the past four decades. Company officials stated that once the shipments are fully delivered, ongoing projects can move forward without further disruption, offering relief to communities awaiting completion.
