The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has clarified that renting social housing flats allocated under Government schemes contradicts the purpose of the programme.

HDC stated that the Government’s social housing initiative was established to provide long-term housing security for those in need, ensuring equitable access to affordable homes. The corporation noted that attempts by recipients to rent their allocated units undermine the intent of the scheme, which is designed to address housing challenges faced by low and middle-income families.

The corporation stressed that social housing flats are not to be treated as commercial assets or traded properties. Their allocation is based on social and economic criteria, prioritising individuals and families who require housing assistance.

Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib, also reaffirmed the Government’s stance, stating that housing units received through subsidised or assisted programmes cannot be rented to third parties. Any changes must be carried out through formal procedures in coordination with relevant Government authorities.

The Minister also indicated that the Government is developing a framework to manage cases where residents wish to move or exchange flats. This will ensure that the process remains transparent and consistent with the objectives of the national housing policy.

The Ministry, in collaboration with HDC, will continue reviewing existing allocations to ensure that social housing units are being used responsibly and in accordance with the intended purpose of supporting those in need.
