The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has requested the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) to file criminal charges against former Maldives Customs Service Senior Superintendent Muaz Ali over allegations of bribery related to a 2018 tobacco import case.
According to the ACC, Muaz allegedly solicited and agreed to accept bribes from representatives of a private company that imported 450 cases of cigarettes stored at the Hulhumalé bonded warehouse. Of these, 430 cases were later released after completing re-export procedures.
The commission’s investigation found that Muaz had allegedly sought bribes from two individuals connected to the company in exchange for influencing the outcome of the case in their favour.
The case was submitted for prosecution under Article 510 of the Penal Code, which pertains to bribery offences.
