Maldives Customs has committed to strict action if it is confirmed that its officers were involved in the theft of two containers of cigarettes seized by the agency.
The two containers, which had been confiscated by Maldives Customs, were reportedly stolen from the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) Hulhumale’ International Terminal. The police have since launched an investigation into the incident.
According to the Maldives Police Service, four individuals, including two businessmen, a senior customs official, and another person, were arrested last night in connection with the theft. Additionally, 12 individuals have been barred from leaving the country as part of the investigation, while several vehicles and premises have been searched.
In a statement, Maldives Customs confirmed that they were informed by police of the alleged involvement of a customs officer in the case. The agency stated that, should the investigation substantiate the claims, the officer would face the harshest disciplinary and legal action permitted under the law.
Customs also assured full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation and pledged to work closely with relevant institutions to prevent similar incidents in the future.
