President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the development of Milandhoo Airport in Shaviyani Atoll will be completed and made operational within the next 30 months. The project, overseen by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), is a key infrastructure initiative aimed at driving socio-economic growth across the Atoll.

The President emphasised that the airport is one of his Administration’s major pledges and will receive special priority due to its potential to boost connectivity and regional development. The project includes the reclamation of 40 hectares of land, which is expected to be completed within eight months, alongside the construction of a new harbour to replace the existing one.

The airport’s design and development will incorporate the relocation of the current harbour, with all necessary arrangements included in the agreement formalised with MACL. Once completed, the facility is expected to enhance transport links, create new economic opportunities, and improve access to essential services for residents across the atoll.

President Dr Muizzu also highlighted a series of complementary development projects aimed at improving public services and infrastructure. These include the construction of a 700-bed Islamic Centre, a 30-bed hospital, and a four-storey police station. Additionally, passport services have been introduced on the island, and new sports facilities are being developed to support youth engagement.

The President further pledged full Government support for the island’s plans to establish an indoor sports complex with a capacity of 1,200 people and a handball court. He also reaffirmed his commitment to completing the construction of 50 housing units and other ongoing development projects with priority for the people of Milandhoo.
