Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has held talks with Ooredoo Group CEO Aziz Aluthman Fakhroo on advancing the Maldives’ digital economy, including efforts to introduce PayPal services in the country.

The meeting took place at the Ooredoo Maldives head office on 15 October, with senior executives from Ooredoo Group also in attendance. According to the Ministry, discussions focused on expanding collaboration to support Government priorities in building a more connected and digitally enabled economy.

Minister Saeed confirmed that PayPal services, one of the world’s most widely used online payment platforms, are among the initiatives being prepared in partnership with Ooredoo. The introduction of such services is expected to benefit freelancers, small businesses, and families dependent on international transactions, aligning with the Administration’s pledge to expand access to modern financial tools.

The talks form part of the Government’s broader digital economy strategy, which seeks to enhance financial inclusion, boost innovation, and strengthen partnerships with global technology and telecommunications providers.
