President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the health and education sectors will each receive a historic budget of MVR 500 million each in the 2026 Budget. He made the statement while addressing the people of Shaviyani Funadhoo during his current visit to the island.
The President said the upcoming budget would give unprecedented priority to both sectors. In education, he pledged to expand inclusive and higher secondary education across the country, with plans to establish inclusive classrooms for students with disabilities in all schools and train more teachers in special education. He also confirmed that a vocational high school will be set up next year to diversify learning opportunities for students.
On health, President Dr Muizzu outlined efforts to expand services within the country, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for critical tests and surgeries. The plans include upgrading facilities in Malé and regional hospitals, as well as introducing new services in selected islands. He added that the Government will strengthen both preventive and curative healthcare to ensure wider access to quality medical treatment.
