President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring that high-quality food items are permanently available in the Maldivian market at affordable prices. The President made the remarks in a post on social media to commemorate World Food Day.
President Dr Muizzu highlighted measures taken by the Government to safeguard the health and well-being of the Maldivian people. He emphasised the Administration’s ongoing campaign to reduce the use of tobacco and vape products, noting that this initiative aims to discourage harmful habits and promote healthier lifestyles.
The President also drew attention to the recent inclusion of fruits and vegetables in the list of essential food items, which were made available through the State Trading Organisation (STO) on 15 October. This step is intended to ensure that nutritious and high-quality food is consistently accessible in the Maldives at reasonable prices.
President Dr Muizzu stressed the importance of maintaining healthy eating and drinking habits to create a society free from disease and to support the well-being of future generations. He noted that the Administration will implement a broad awareness campaign to promote these practices nationwide.
He concluded his post with prayers for Allah to bless the food and drink of the Maldivian people and to preserve their health and well-being.
Ensuring food security and providing affordable food and beverages is a key policy of the Government. In line with this, 23 items have been added to the list of basic foods, selected based on import volumes, domestic consumption, and their nutritional value.
The newly added items include ten fruits and ten types of vegetables commonly consumed across the country, alongside turmeric, mugs, cucumbers, and eggs. These products are now imported and sold through the STO at regulated prices, addressing previous price surges. The STO has assured that the prices of these items will remain stable in the market.
