The Maldives has called on the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) to take a more proactive and reform-oriented role in addressing global challenges, during the 19th Midterm Ministerial Meeting held in Kampala, Uganda.
Delivering the national statement on behalf of the Maldives, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr Mohamed Fahmy Hassan underlined that shifting geopolitical and security dynamics require NAM to respond with urgency and unity. He outlined priorities for the bloc, including strengthening collective action against non-traditional threats, advancing innovation for sustainable development, and supporting reforms in global governance structures such as the UN Security Council.
The Maldives also expressed support for recent progress toward a ceasefire in Gaza, urging Israel to respect the agreement and reaffirming the country’s commitment to peace efforts. Ambassador Dr Fahmy commended Uganda’s leadership in chairing the meeting, which brought together foreign ministers and senior officials from NAM’s 121 member states to review the Movement’s role in today’s evolving global order.
The Maldives, a member of NAM since 1976, reiterated that renewed cooperation and reform are essential to ensuring the Movement remains relevant in shaping a more just and equitable international system.
