President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the second airport planned for Laamu Atoll will be developed with a focus on sustainable development.

Speaking during his visit to Laamu Maavah, the President said the airport is among the most significant pledges made to the atoll and will be designed with consideration for geography, tourism potential, transport needs and future development. He added that work on the project will commence soon.

The President also assured that all projects inaugurated or initiated during his visit will be properly implemented.

Highlighting ongoing development efforts in Maavah, the President noted that the scope of the island’s land reclamation project has been expanded from 15 hectares to 30 hectares. He said a state-of-the-art football ground will be among the first projects completed following reclamation.

The President further announced plans to launch a housing project once land reclamation is completed. Additional roads will also be constructed as part of the road development project initiated, and a fish aggregating device (FAD) will be installed to support sports fishing activities requested by the island’s youth.

Addressing healthcare improvements, President Dr Muizzu said the agreement for the expansion of Maavah Health Centre will be signed this month. The expansion will add a four-bed ward and a public health unit, alongside other upgrades, toward a long-term goal of converting the centre into a hospital.

He also said a new sea ambulance fleet expansion project will begin next year, under which a sea ambulance will be stationed in Maavah.

In addition, the President highlighted efforts to boost tourism in the atoll, stating that nearby resort development opportunities have been opened as part of his Administration’s pledge to increase the number of resorts in Laamu Atoll.
