The Government has requested the Male' City Council to transfer control of its newly built pet care facility, Olhu Hiyaa, to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare on Tuesday, following discussions about facility operations.

The Animal Welfare Ministry released a statement on Tuesday night suggesting a temporary pause in bringing cats to the facility, while operational arrangements are finalised. The Ministry had previously indicated that the council had yet to respond to proposed guidelines for animal care at the facility.

Male' Mayor Adam Azim confirmed receiving the transfer request, noting that the council would deliberate on the directive. The council had made substantial investments in the facility and was preparing to commence operations.

The directive, citing a Cabinet decision, came just weeks after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu inaugurated the facility, which was established to house and care for stray cats in the Male' region.

Prior to issuing the transfer directive, the Ministry had held consultations with the City Council regarding these matters.
