President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended his Huravee Day greetings, emphasising the importance of loyalty and faithfulness to one’s country.
In a social media post marking the occasion, the President highlighted the values symbolised by Huravee Day, noting that it serves as a reminder of the ideals of national devotion and the distinction between being faithful and unfaithful to one's nation.
He also reflected on the legacy of Sultan Hassan Izzuddin, known as Dhon Bandaarain, whose leadership during the Maldives' liberation from South Indian invaders in 1752 remains a source of national pride.
Huravee Day, celebrated annually on the third day of Jumad-ul-Ahira in the Islamic calendar, honours Dhon Bandaarain’s heroism. Born in Huraa, Kaafu Atoll, Dhon Bandaarain led the Maldives' resistance against the Malabaris, who had invaded the Maldives. His four-month battle in 1752 culminated in the liberation of the Maldives, and the day now commemorates his pivotal role in freeing the nation from foreign rule.
The term “Huravee Day” is derived from Sultan Hassan’s heritage, as he hailed from the island of Huraa, and honours his exceptional leadership. Following the victory, Dhon Bandaarain was offered the or crown, by the people of the Maldives. However, he declined, choosing instead to temporarily take charge of the country. This decision highlighted his selflessness and commitment to the nation’s welfare over the pursuit of personal power.
Dhon Bandaarain only accepted the rulership of the Maldives after the death of Sultan Mukarram Muhammad Imaduddin III in 1173 AH. He ruled the country until 1180 AH, leaving a legacy of courage, honour, and unwavering loyalty to the Maldives.
Huravee Day is not only a commemoration of this historic victory but also an opportunity for Maldivians to reflect on the enduring values of leadership and patriotism, reminding the nation of the sacrifices made for its independence.
