President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has extended condolences to the family of Mohamed Ali, a respected figure known for his significant contributions to the development of Eydhafushi, following his passing. 

Mohamed Ali passed away in Chennai, India, at the age of 91 while undergoing treatment. He was widely recognised for his long-standing service to the island community, particularly in areas such as trade, transport, fisheries and social development.

One of his most notable legacies is the “Masjid Al Mohamed Ali”, a mosque he built in Eydhafushi. Completed over four years with support from his associates, the mosque opened on 20 March 2025. Its design draws inspiration from architectural styles found in Oman, Uzbekistan, Dubai, Saudi Arabia and Turkey, making it one of the most admired mosques in the Maldives. It has since become a popular site for both residents and visitors.

Mohamed Ali had expressed a desire to build a mosque in his home island during his lifetime, a wish fulfilled through the completion of the landmark structure that now stands as a testament to his dedication and service.
