Bariatric surgery services have officially been launched at Dharumavantha Hospital, marking a major expansion in specialised healthcare in the Maldives.

In a statement issued on X, Chief Executive Officer of the Malé City Group of Hospitals, Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, announced the launch, stating that it reflects the Government’s efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system and expand access to advanced medical services. He described the introduction of bariatric surgery as a significant milestone in public healthcare and one of the most important developments in recent years.

Haleem also commended President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s leadership, stating that the scale of progress in the health sector demonstrates a strong commitment to improving access to specialised treatment for the public.

Bariatric surgery, which alters the digestive system to support long-term weight loss, is widely recognised as an effective treatment for severe obesity. The procedure is also known to reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and certain forms of cancer.

He noted that, in addition to physical health benefits, bariatric surgery contributes to improved mental well-being, self-confidence, and overall quality of life. Many patients, he added, also experience reduced dependence on long-term medication following the procedure.

According to Haleem, extensive preparations were carried out by the Surgery Department to establish the service at the hospital. He acknowledged the contribution of surgeons, anaesthesiologists, nurses, clinical and technical staff, as well as administrative and support teams, for their role in making the service operational.

He also recognised the support of Dr Azna, identified as the first bariatric surgeon in Dhaka, for her involvement in launching the service.

Haleem said the introduction of bariatric surgery in the public healthcare system offers new hope to patients affected by obesity-related illnesses and represents a significant step forward in improving specialised medical care in the Maldives.
