The Parliament of the Maldives has adjourned for its year-end recess after extending its final sitting by three days to complete key legislative work.

Although recess was originally scheduled to begin on 1 December, Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla tabled and passed a motion to continue sittings until Wednesday to ensure the passage of several priority bills. Speaking at the closing of the session, he said the 20th People’s Majlis remains committed to completing essential legislative duties before taking recess, particularly bills linked to governance and public services.

During the final session of 2025, MPs passed 15 bills and held 28 sittings alongside 142 committee meetings. Ministers also faced 29 parliamentary questions. The Majlis concluded 16 Government-submitted cases and nine cases submitted by the Presidency.

Among the most significant legislation passed was the amendment to the Drug Act, which introduces the capital punishment for individuals convicted of drug smuggling under specified thresholds. Other approved bills include amendments to the Special Economic Zone Act, Higher Education and Training Act, Trademark Bill, Judges Act, as well as constitutional and Decentralisation Act amendments.

Parliament will resume sittings in early 2026 following the recess period.
