Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has stressed the need to strengthen awareness programmes on AIDS among youth, noting that emerging trends indicate young people require greater attention despite progress made in controlling the disease nationally.

The Minister made the remarks while speaking at the opening ceremony of activities held in Thinadhoo City to commemorate World AIDS Day, which is observed annually on 1 December. This year’s commemoration is being held at the national level in Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, with a series of outreach and awareness programmes organised across the region.

Addressing participants, the Minister noted that AIDS was once considered a highly dangerous disease, but is now largely under control due to sustained public health interventions. He said the situation in the Maldives has remained stable as a result of measures taken to prevent the spread of the virus, but added that there are clear indications young people continue to face risks, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.

He added that the Government will work closely with relevant State institutions and non-governmental organisations to expand awareness efforts, stressing that meaningful results can be achieved if youth engage with the same commitment that contributed to earlier successes in the health sector. The Minister also reiterated that addressing health challenges requires collective responsibility, noting that many preventable diseases can be tackled through informed lifestyle choices and cooperation at all levels of society.

As part of World AIDS Day commemorations, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) led a week-long programme of activities across 10 islands in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. These included a Red Ribbon Challenge involving youth from across the atoll, awareness sessions for healthcare workers, a migrant health camp for expatriate workers in Thinadhoo, screening and outreach programmes for individuals with substance abuse issues, and a family evening organised for the community.

The HPA said people from all walks of life took part in the activities, with strong public participation reflecting continued community support for efforts to raise awareness and reduce the risks associated with HIV and AIDS.
