Velana International Airport (VIA) is expected to serve over 22,000 passengers today, according to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), making it one of the busiest travel days since the opening of the airport’s new terminal.
MACL stated that current estimates indicate over 11,000 departures are scheduled for the day, with a similar number expected to arrive through VIA. The company attributed the heightened traffic to seasonal travel demand and higher outbound movement for religious pilgrimage. It also noted that this is the fastest period of travel flow recorded since the new terminal began operations.
In response to the increased traffic, MACL has deployed additional staff across key service areas to support passenger movement, provide guidance, and manage queues. The company said measures are being taken to maintain regular operations despite crowding, while efforts continue to streamline services in coordination with airport stakeholders.
MACL added that the expanded terminal space is expected to ease pressure on passenger facilities, improve flow through check-in and arrival areas, and enhance the overall travel experience. A total of 39 airlines are currently operating flights to the new Terminal 1, with MACL planning to fully transfer all carriers to the new terminal by the end of the year. The relocation of seaplane counters and the introduction of duty-free services at the terminal are also scheduled in the coming days.
The year-end period traditionally brings the highest volume of travel to the Maldives, driven by both tourism demand and increased domestic departures. MACL stated that operational adjustments will continue as needed to manage peak-season movement and ensure services remain accessible to passengers.
