The Government has commenced practical works to install a solar-diesel hybrid power system in Baa Dhonfan as part of efforts to expand the use of renewable energy across the Maldives.
According to the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the project is aimed at reducing reliance on diesel for electricity generation on the island while promoting environmentally friendly energy solutions.
Under the project, a 301-kilowatt peak solar photovoltaic system will be installed in Dhonfan, along with a 537.6-kilowatt battery energy storage system to store solar energy for use during non-daylight hours.
The Ministry said the hybrid system is expected to save approximately 141,443 litres of diesel annually. This will significantly reduce harmful emissions, including an estimated reduction of 347 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year.
The project forms part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s renewable energy policy, which aims to generate 33 per cent of the Maldives’ electricity from renewable sources by 2028.
