Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has stated that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration is actively pursuing economic measures that will directly benefit the public, with a strong emphasis on supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Speaking on ‘Tharujamaanaa Eku’ programme with the President’s Office Chief Spokesperson, Heena Waleed, Minister Saeed said that measures introduced by the President in response to concerns raised by SMEs are expected to help businesses expand and strengthen their operations. Among the key initiatives highlighted is the decision by Maldives Customs Service to extend the demurrage-free waiting period for air cargo imports from 80 hours to 120 hours, a move aimed at easing import-related pressures on small businesses.

The Minister noted that the majority of goods imported into the Maldives by air are handled by SMEs, many of which operate with minimal staff or are managed directly by business owners. He said the extended demurrage-free period is expected to significantly reduce operational costs and logistical challenges for these enterprises.

Minister Saeed added that the Ministry of Finance and planning is working with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority to introduce more flexible tax payment arrangements for businesses facing cash-flow difficulties, particularly those awaiting payments from state-owned enterprises or government institutions.

In addition, he said the Government is expanding opportunities for SMEs to access larger markets. He noted that more than 400 Maldivian businesses registered on Alibaba are now actively selling their products through the platform.

Referring to business promotion initiatives, Minister Saeed said the upcoming 2026 Expo will be broader in scope than previous editions, allowing greater participation by SMEs. He added that strengthening small and medium-sized enterprises has been a priority since the President Dr Muizzu took office, emphasising that sustained national economic growth depends on the success and expansion of local businesses.
