President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has nominated Dr Aishath Rameela as President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).

The nomination is scheduled to be tabled at Parliament on Monday and referred to the Parliament’s Human Rights Committee for review.

Dr Rameela was appointed as a member of the HRCM on 3 December 2025, replacing outgoing member Mariyam Muna following the expiry of her term.

A former Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, she resigned from the post in December 2024 citing health reasons. With more than three decades of experience in public service, she began her career as a nurse in 1990 and has since served in various roles across the Government and the private sector.

She holds a PhD in Social Science, awarded in Malaysia in 2010, and has previously served as Minister of State for Health and Minister of State for Health and Family.
