Statistics released by the Criminal Court show a sharp increase in cases concluded following its relocation to Justice Building Annex, with the number of cases decided per month rising by 140 per cent.

According to court statistics, a total of 1,062 cases were filed at the Criminal Court in 2025, while judges delivered rulings in 1,380 cases during the year. This places the case completion rate at around 130 per cent.

Prior to the move to the new building, the court concluded an average of 72 cases per month in 2025. After relocating, this figure increased to an average of 175 cases per month, representing a 140 per cent rise in monthly case resolution.

Judge Ali Nadeem decided the highest number of cases during the year, with a total of 302 rulings.

Comparatively, the court concluded 649 cases in 2024, meaning the number of cases decided in 2025 increased by 113 per cent year-on-year.

The court also reported significant progress in reducing the number of individuals held in pre-trial detention. At the beginning of 2025, 272 people were in custody awaiting the conclusion of their trials. By the end of the year, this number had been reduced to 128.

Delays in court proceedings had previously been attributed to the deteriorating condition of the old courthouse. After President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office, a new facility was prepared for the Criminal Court at the Justice Building Annex in Hulhumalé, with the relocation taking place on 27 July 2025.

Both the Criminal Court of Maldives and the Drug Court of Maldives were moved to the new building in July. The facility includes 10 courtrooms serving 11 sections of the Criminal Court, along with five courtrooms designated for the Drug Court.
