National Fertility Centre at Dharumavantha Hospital --
The first successful birth of a baby conceived through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) has been recorded at the National Fertility Centre of Dharumavantha Hospital.
The achievement was announced by Abdul Razzaq Haleem, Chief Executive Officer of Male' City Group of Hospitals, who described the development as a major breakthrough for families seeking fertility treatment within the country. He acknowledged the efforts of the National Fertility Centre team and supporting hospital departments in delivering the service successfully.
The establishment of local IVF services has addressed long-standing financial and psychological burdens faced by Maldivian couples who previously had to travel abroad for treatment.
In his 2025 Presidential Address, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu noted that the National Fertility Centre, inaugurated in November 2024 in line with his pledge to deliver a lasting and sustainable solution to those undergoing the hardships of infertility, has been addressing public concerns.
Since its inception, 144 individuals had accessed service and fertility care at the National Fertility Centre by the end of last year.
To ensure sustainability, MVR 15 million has been allocated from the State budget, and a fertility care fund has been established to support ongoing fertility services in the Maldives.
