Dengue and influenza cases increased in December compared to November last year, according to figures released by the Ministry of Health.

The Ministry reported that 413 dengue cases were recorded in December, up from 382 cases in November.

Influenza cases also rose during the same period. A total of 152 cases of respiratory influenza were reported in December, compared to 121 cases in November.

Health statistics show that 4,407 people were tested for influenza last year, with 1,270 individuals testing positive.

Meanwhile, cases of common cold and diarrhoea declined in December. The number of reported common cold cases fell to 28,619 in December from 32,859 in November. Similarly, cases of diarrhoea and vomiting decreased to 2,931 in December, compared to 4,102 cases reported the previous month.

In response to the increase in respiratory illnesses, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to take precautionary measures, particularly during the holiday period.

The HPA advised the public to wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, avoid crowded places if experiencing flu-like symptoms, and wear a mask when going out if unwell. People at higher risk have also been advised to wear masks when outdoors or in crowded settings.

The agency further stressed the importance of seeking medical advice if fever persists or symptoms worsen. Individuals with symptoms of the common cold have been advised to cover their nose and mouth with a mask and to avoid visiting children, the elderly and patients while unwell.
