The Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) on Thursday stated that it intends to appeal five of the seven bribery charges filed against former Managing Director of Maldive Gas Private Limited, Abdulla Maumoon, which were dismissed by the Criminal Court.
PGO had previously alleged that Maumoon accepted MVR 3.1 million in illicit payments from a company contracted to supply liquefied petroleum gas in 2016, during his tenure under the administration of former President Abdulla Yameen. Investigations found that the funds were channelled through businesses linked to Maumoon and deposited into bank accounts belonging to his family members.
Seven bribery charges were filed against Maumoon by the PGO. However, the Criminal Court ruled that five of the charges had not been proven and dismissed them, stating that the evidence presented by the prosecution was inadequate and did not meet the required legal standard.
As a result, the Prosecutor General’s Office stated that it intends to appeal the dismissal of the five charges at the High Court. The Office added that a final decision on proceeding with the appeal will be taken after receiving the full trial judgment.
On 29 September 2025, the Criminal Court found Maumoon guilty on two counts of bribery and sentenced him to 12 years, nine months and 18 days in prison.
