Minister of State for Cities, Local Government and Public Works Uz Moosa Fathuhee Adam has stressed that councils are handed over to elected representatives by the people to manage public affairs, and not to play the role of political party activists.
Speaking on MMTV’s “Dhiveheenge Raajje” programme, Uz Fathuhee said local councils represent a tier of Government established to deliver services to the people, and that even existing laws do not permit councils to obstruct or interfere with the work of the central Government. He stressed that councillors are expected to carry out their responsibilities in line with the interests and expectations of the public.
Addressing the ongoing local council elections, Uz Fathuhee said individuals elected to councils must demonstrate good character, a clear vision, and a commitment to public service. He described People’s National Congress (PNC) mayoral candidate for Malé City, Major (Rtd) Moosa Ali Jaleel, as a loyal citizen who is committed to the people and the State, adding that such qualities are essential for effective local governance.
He noted that the mandate given to councillors, whether at city, island, or Women’s Development Committee (WDC) level, is administrative and service-oriented, rather than political. He said councils are tasked with organising and managing local affairs, and that this responsibility requires cooperation with national policies rather than political confrontation.
Addressing statements made by opposition figures, he said claims that winning mayoral positions would enable councils to hold the Government accountable fall outside the legal authority of local councils. He added that the law does not provide councils with the mandate to interfere in the functions of the Government.
Uz Fathuhee reiterated his view that Major (Rtd) Moosa Ali Jaleel is the most qualified candidate for the post of Mayor of Malé City and called on the PNC to secure a majority across councils, alongside the mayoral seat, to ensure effective coordination and service delivery at the local level.
