The national airline, Maldivian, has expanded regional air connectivity by linking four southern atolls, with scheduled flights set to commence on 1 February 2026.

The new South Connectivity service connects Seenu, Gnaviyani, Gaafu Alifu ,and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls, strengthening air links across the southernmost regions of the Maldives. The launch was marked by a special ceremony held at Gan International Airport, attended by Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen, along with cabinet ministers and senior officials from Island Aviation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Managing Director of Island Aviation Ibrahim Iyas said Gan International Airport has been designated as an operational base for Maldivian, making it the first such base established by the airline after Velana International Airport. He also noted that Maldivian is the first airline in the country to operate scheduled commercial flights using wheeled Twin Otter aircraft.

He highlighted Addu’s growing importance as a tourism destination and said the new air links between the four atolls are expected to further support tourism development in the region. He added that the service would address long-standing travel difficulties faced by residents and improve mobility between islands.

Maldivian currently operates twice-weekly flights between Gan and Malé. With the introduction of the new routes, all southern atolls will now be connected by air. The airline said this would strengthen regional communities, support social development, and improve access for essential travel, including education and medical referrals via Gan.

Under the new network, flights will operate across five sectors, including services from Gan in Addu to Kaadedhdhoo and Kooddoo airports in Huvadhu Atoll, as well as flights from Fuvahmulah to Kaadedhdhoo and Kooddoo. Fares ranging from MVR 500 to MVR 900, with bookings now open. The flights will be operated using Maldivian’s Twin Otter fleet, with each aircraft accommodating up to 15 passengers.

Maldivian said the initiative aligns with the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation’s policy to enhance regional connectivity, with Addu Gan positioned as a hub for southern air travel. The airline added that the service is expected to benefit resorts, guesthouses, and other tourism service providers, while also enabling tourists arriving in Gan to travel seamlessly to other islands in the region.
