The Government is working to commence operations of two international airlines to Gan International Airport in efforts to strengthen air connectivity and expand tourism in the southern region, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has said.
Speaking at the ceremony held at Gan International Airport to inaugurate Southern Connectivity network linking four atolls through the national airline Maldivian, the minister said Gan International Airport has long had the physical capacity to accommodate a wide range of aircraft operated by international airlines. However, he noted that international operations had not materialised in the past due to the absence of a conducive operational environment and insufficient focus on developing tourism in the region.
Minister Ameen said the launch of the Southern Connectivity network is expected to broaden tourism opportunities across Addu, Gnaviyani and Huvadhoo atolls. He revealed that the Government is currently engaged in discussions with one airline from the Middle East and another from China to begin international flights to Gan International Airport.
The minister said the Government is prepared to offer significant concessions to attract international carriers, stressing that plans are underway to improve conditions at the airport and position GIA as the main aviation hub for the southern Maldives. He added that the Administration’s vision extends beyond the construction of airports to the development of integrated civil aviation networks that connect islands and communities.
According to minister Ameen, improved air connectivity will also support social and economic development in the south, including better access for residents travelling for education, scholarships and medical treatment. He noted that the region currently has around 3,900 tourist beds, which are expected to become more accessible through enhanced transport links.
The minister further said that connecting the southern atolls through domestic and seaplane services would boost local tourism, enabling visitors arriving in Gan to travel more easily to neighbouring islands for activities such as diving and surfing. He added that the Government plans to increase seaplane services in the south if demand grows, with future plans to include additional airports such as Faresmaathodaa and Maavarulu.
