The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has begun repair work on sewer pipes damaged in the fire that broke out at Hiyaa Tower 5, with the works expected to be completed within a week.

HDC said air conditioning units affected by the fire are being removed and cleaned, while assessments are underway to identify damage to sewer pipes and carry out the necessary repairs.

The corporation apologised for the inconvenience caused to residents due to temporary restrictions on toilet use during repairs to the main sewer lines. HDC said cooperation from residents would be required to complete the works as quickly as possible and urged occupants of the affected apartments to assist where necessary.

The fire, which occurred on Friday, damaged sewer pipes in 38 apartments within the tower. Relevant authorities are currently working to resolve the issues arising from the incident.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has provided temporary shelter and food assistance to 140 people displaced by the fire. Those assisted include 49 men, 48 women and 43 children.
