The Small Island Geographic Society, the Local Government Authority, and the Maldives Institute of Local Governance signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 2 February 2026 between to collaborate on the implementation of project activities in the Maldives under the REDEFINE Project.

The agreement formalises cooperation among the three institutions to support conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and crisis preparedness initiatives at the community level, with a particular focus on challenges linked to environmental issues, climate change, and natural resource management.

The MoU was signed on behalf of the Local Government Authority by Director Ms Hawwa Izwath, on behalf of the Maldives Institute of Local Governance by Director Mr Hussain Waheed, and on behalf of the Small Island Geographic Society by Ms Mizna Mohamed, Director of Science and Innovation.

Titled “Redefining Conflict Prevention and Peace-building – Empowering CSOs for Sustainable Peace in Sri Lanka and the Maldives,” the REDEFINE Project aims to strengthen the capacity and resilience of youth- and women-led civil society organisations, young peace-builders, and multi-actor networks operating at city, island, and district levels in selected areas of the Maldives and Sri Lanka.

The project is funded by the European Union and is implemented by Chrysalis as the main implementing partner, alongside SIGS as the co-implementing partner in the Maldives.
