Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdulla Rafiu has stated that the pledges made by the Government for the sports sector after assuming office were not mere statements, adding that tangible progress is now visible in their implementation.

He made the remarks while delivering his address at the Maldives Sports Awards 2025 ceremony.

The Minister explained that the vision for the sports sector is guided by a long-term strategic plan. He described it as a comprehensive approach that extends beyond infrastructure development to include athlete development, strengthening technical capacity and improving access to modern facilities. The overarching objective, he said, is to establish a structured and sustainable framework that enables sports to progress in a consistent and organised manner.

He further noted that the long-term plan sets out the direction the Government intends to take in advancing the sector. It encompasses urban development projects linked to sports, programmes designed to encourage children who are new to sports, advanced training pathways and expanded opportunities for Maldivian athletes to gain international exposure. These initiatives are aligned with the targets outlined in the national sports development roadmap.

Highlighting ongoing efforts, the Minister said special priority is being given to the advancement of sports nationwide. Modern sports facilities are currently under development across various regions, while several grounds, courts and tracks have already been completed and handed over.

He emphasised that the vision is not to create facilities that function solely as places to play, but to build a sustainable system through which sports can systematically grow and thrive.
