The Managing Director of Hajj Corporation, Mohamed Shakeel, has praised President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to reduce the financial burden on Maldivians undertaking the pilgrimage.
Speaking during an appearance on MMTV’s Bodu Khabaru programme, Shakeel emphasised that the current costs associated with Hajj are significant, and reducing them would represent a major achievement for the Administration.
Shakeel expressed his commitment to making this vision a reality, highlighting his efforts since taking over the company. He explained that the substantial expenses borne by pilgrims represent a significant challenge, and addressing these costs has been a priority under the current Administration.
Reflecting on the past year, Shakeel noted that significant strides have been made to improve the services provided by the Hajj Corporation. He described the company as being in a weakened state when he assumed responsibility, with the private groups organising Hajj and Umrah trips leading and offering more robust arrangements.
Shakeel also criticised practices under the previous administration, where he alleged that government companies were used for political purposes.
Rebuilding trust in the Hajj Corporation, Shakeel stressed, has been essential to ensuring its success. He stated that gaining public confidence was a critical first step, and he believes this objective has now been achieved.
