Chief Government Spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef has rejected allegations made by former Controller General of Immigration Shamaan Waheed against President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.

Shareef dismissed the allegations following comments made by Shamaan during a press conference held ahead of a court hearing on Tuesday. During the briefing, Shamaan made a number of allegations against several Government ministers and President Dr Muizzu.

Shamaan, who is facing charges related to the alleged misuse of his official position to extort money from expatriates and sell work quotas, has denied the accusations against him. He instead alleged that the actions in question were linked to Minister of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology Ali Ihusaan.

Shamaan further claimed that President Dr Muizzu was aware of the alleged activities and had acted to protect Minister Ihusaan.

Responding to the remarks, Shareef said the allegations directed at President Dr Muizzu were untrue.

Meanwhile, the Criminal Court has ruled that Shamaan is guilty of three offences: participation in extortion, abuse of official authority and money laundering.
