The Maldivian High Commission in Sri Lanka has begun providing basic food and water supplies to Maldivians affected by severe flooding across the country.
According to the High Commission, assistance efforts are underway for individuals and families who have requested support as the situation continues to disrupt transport, services and daily life.
A call centre has been established to identify Maldivians in need, with the mission closely monitoring the welfare of citizens living in Colombo and other flood-affected regions. The High Commission confirmed that food items, drinking water and other essentials are being delivered to those facing shortages, including Maldivian students residing across Sri Lanka.
Officials said assistance has also been extended to Maldivians stranded at Bandaranaike International Airport, where flight disruptions and transport difficulties have affected travellers. In addition to supporting its own nationals, the High Commission said it is preparing to contribute to broader relief efforts for Sri Lankan communities impacted by the floods.
The Embassy has urged Maldivians to adhere to local safety guidelines issued by Sri Lankan authorities, advising against non-essential travel, particularly in areas vulnerable to flooding and landslides. The Sri Lanka Meteorological Department has warned residents to avoid travelling during heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Maldivians living in low-lying or coastal areas have been advised to relocate to safer locations where necessary. The High Commission has asked anyone requiring help to contact its emergency hotline: 768816666, as it continues to coordinate relief and monitor developments on the ground.
