The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has urged the public to take precautions against the spread of illnesses during the upcoming Eid holidays, as cases of several infectious diseases continue to increase across the Maldives.
In a statement issued by the agency, the HPA said its data shows that cases of dengue fever and influenza-like illnesses are currently higher than usual in several parts of the country. The agency also noted that cases of measles have been reported in the Greater Malé Region.
The HPA stated that increased travel within the country and abroad during the Eid holidays, along with family visits and gatherings in crowded places, could increase the spread of illnesses.
The agency advised people experiencing fever or respiratory symptoms to remain at home and avoid attending public gatherings or activities. Individuals whose condition worsens were urged to seek medical attention promptly.
The HPA also advised members of the public to wear masks when seeking medical treatment and to avoid using public transport while unwell. Those who undergo measles testing were advised to remain isolated until receiving their results.
In addition, the agency encouraged the use of masks in crowded and enclosed areas such as airport terminals, ferry lounges and public transport.
The HPA further advised the public to wash or sanitise their hands regularly, especially before eating, and to ensure vaccinations for preventable diseases are up to date in order to reduce the severity and spread of illnesses.
The agency also issued advice on preventing mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever. Recommended measures include using mosquito repellents containing DEET, IR3535 or Icaridin, wearing clothing that covers most of the body, using mosquito nets, installing screens on doors and windows, and eliminating stagnant water and other mosquito breeding sites around homes.
The HPA also urged the public to rely on official sources when seeking health-related information and to verify information shared on social media and other platforms.
