Higher secondary education has been introduced in four additional schools across the Maldives, expanding access to advanced secondary education for students in the atolls.

The schools that began offering higher secondary education this academic year are Raa Ungoofaaru School, Raa Inguraidhoo School, Thaa Atoll Education Centre and Gaafu Dhaalu Madaveli School.

Ungoofaaru School has resumed higher secondary classes after a seven year hiatus. The school first launched higher secondary education in 2013, but the programme was discontinued in 2019. Grade 11 classes have now recommenced with 11 students enrolled, including two students from outside the island.

At Raa Inguraidhoo School, Grade 11 classes began with eight students, while nine students enrolled in the first Grade 11 cohort at Madaveli School.

The expansion is part of the Government's ongoing efforts to make higher secondary education more accessible nationwide. Last year, five additional schools were also brought under the programme as part of the same policy initiative.
