Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness Abdulla Rafiu has stated that the People's National Congress (PNC) will continue to work for the benefit of the public and the development of the Maldives, regardless of the political affiliations of Members of Parliament.
Speaking at a PNC gathering held at the party's headquarters on Tuesday night, Minister Rafiu made the remarks while reflecting on the outcome of the North Hithadhoo by-election, which concluded on Saturday.
Minister Rafiu, who served as the PNC's campaign manager for the by-election, noted that the party had narrowly lost the seat by a margin of 62 votes. He described the support received by the party across polling stations in Hithadhoo as a foundation on which to build in the future.
The Minister stated that the intensive efforts undertaken during the short election period demonstrated the unity and solidarity within the PNC. He added that the by-election had also highlighted the party's ability to deliver on its commitments to the public within a limited timeframe.
Referring to initiatives implemented in Hithadhoo, Minister Rafiu said a number of projects aimed at addressing the needs of residents had been carried out. He noted that even within the sports sector, projects such as the development of outdoor gym facilities and futsal grounds had progressed rapidly, allowing the public to directly benefit from them.
"The election showed that when we work with determination, projects can be completed within a short period and the public can quickly experience their benefits," he said.
Minister Rafiu also expressed gratitude to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for the support extended during the campaign. He further thanked members of the PNC leadership and campaign teams for their efforts throughout the by-election.
