The Government has begun implementing new speed limits for vessels operating within the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) as part of efforts to strengthen marine conservation and improve safety in the protected zone.

The Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy said the speed restrictions have been introduced under the newly implemented SAMPA Management Plan, which aims to protect the area's marine biodiversity and ensure its long-term sustainability.

According to the ministry, different speed limits have been designated for various zones within the protected area. The measures are intended to reduce disturbances and collisions involving marine species, particularly whale sharks and sea turtles that inhabit the region.

The ministry noted that the introduction of the speed limits will also enhance safety for tourists and other visitors who frequent the area for marine activities. Officials said the speed restrictions form part of efforts to strengthen the management of protected areas across the Maldives through improved regulations and conservation measures.

Vessel operators travelling within SAMPA have been urged to familiarise themselves with the new regulations and comply with the designated speed limits.
