Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development Dr Ismail Shafeeu has said work to install air conditioning in classrooms is underway at 52 schools as part of the Government's Cool School Project.
The Cool School Project was launched in June 2024, with Kaafu Maafushi School becoming the first school to have its classrooms air-conditioned under the initiative.
Speaking in Parliament while responding to questions from MPs, Minister Dr Shafeeu said no previous government had undertaken a nationwide initiative to air-condition schools, describing the Cool School Project as a key priority of the current Administration.
He said air-conditioning units have already been delivered to all schools under the project, with installation work progressing according to schedule.
The Minister noted that many school buildings in the Maldives are between 30 and 40 years old, meaning electrical systems in a number of schools require upgrading before air-conditioning units can be installed. He said work to upgrade electrical infrastructure and install the units is being carried out simultaneously.
