Maldives Customs Service seized 31.1 per cent more drugs during the past two and a half years compared with the previous three-year period, while the number of drug-related cases investigated by the agency also increased.
Statistics released by Customs show officers confiscated 324 kilogrammes of drugs between 2024 and June 2026, compared with 247 kilogrammes seized between 2021 and 2023. During the same period, the agency investigated 147 drug-related cases, up from 116 cases recorded over the previous three years, representing an increase of 27 per cent.
Customs also noted that the total quantity of drugs seized between 2024 and June 2026 exceeded the amount confiscated during the entire five-year period from 2019 to 2023.
The Government has been strengthening efforts to prevent drugs from being smuggled into the Maldives by enhancing border security and intercepting illegal narcotics before they reach communities across the country.
