President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Elections Commission member Mohamed Shakeel as President of the Elections Commission (EC).

Shakeel was appointed as a member of the Elections Commission on June 24 with the approval of the People's Majlis. The Majlis later approved his appointment as President of the Commission with the votes of 51 members after endorsing the President's nomination.

The Elections Commission announced on Wednesday that President Dr Muizzu had formally appointed Shakeel as President of the Commission.

Shakeel previously served as a member of the Elections Commission from December 3, 2014, to May 9, 2018. Before that, he served as the Commission's Director General from September 1, 2013, to December 3, 2014.

The Elections Commission consists of five members. In addition to President Shakeel, the current members are Vice President Abdul Rahman Salaah Rasheed and members Hassan Zakariyya, Abdul Haseeb Ismail, and Uz Rifath Abdulla.
