Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor has been ordered by the Civil Court to pay MVR 1 million in outstanding fines to the state within one month, following his earlier conviction in the massive Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal.
The Civil Court ruling mandates payment to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) after the Attorney General's Office sought enforcement of the original 2020 Criminal Court judgment, which had included both the fine and a 20-year prison sentence.
Adeeb was found guilty of seven charges, including embezzlement, money laundering, and corruption through misuse of his official position. These convictions stemmed from a plea agreement signed in September 2019, which had resulted in reduced sentences.
Despite the severity of his sentence, Adeeb was released from prison on November 13, 2023 through a clemency grant by then-President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in the final months of his administration.
The MMPRC scandal is considered one of the largest corruption cases in Maldivian history, involving the embezzlement of millions in state funds from tourism revenue. The case implicated numerous government officials and sparked significant political upheaval in the island nation. Adeeb served as Vice President from July to November 2015 before his initial arrest.
