Maldives Meteorological Services (MET) has announced that heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across most parts of the country until Wednesday.

The MET office predicts light to moderate rainfall in large areas of the central and northern atolls, while southern regions will also experience rainfall, influenced by the weather phenomenon known locally as keri.

Sea conditions are likely to remain rough during this period, with further intensification expected under cloudy skies. Wind speeds are anticipated to range between 8 and 18 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 30 km/h, particularly over the south-central atolls and moving northeastwards.

Wave heights across the country, which typically range between 2 and 5 feet, are expected to remain within these limits but may fluctuate under rough conditions.

Over the last 24 hours, the heaviest rainfall was recorded in Goidhoo, Baa Atoll, where 43.4 mm of rain was measured.

This spell of rainfall has been attributed to a circulation and an associated trough impacting the eastern regions of the Maldives. The MET office advises caution, especially for those traveling by sea, as the conditions are expected to persist in the coming days.
