President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Moomina Waheed as the Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) on January 26.

Moomina Waheed, a seasoned expert in human rights and governance, holds two Master’s degrees from the University of Sydney, Australia: one in Human Rights and Democratisation (Asia Pacific) and another in Criminology.

She has been a member of HRCM since 2020, during which she also served as Acting Secretary of the Commission.

The Vice Presidency became vacant after the resignation of Dr Ahmed Adhuham, creating the need for a new appointment.

Moomina’s nomination was met with unanimous approval from all Members of Parliament who participated in the vote, reflecting strong support for her leadership.

Beyond her work with HRCM, Moomina’s career has spanned multiple roles, including serving as a Development Consultant for the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.

Moomina will work alongside HRCM President Mariyam Muna and fellow members Aminath Shifa-ath Abdul Razzaq, Samau Ahmed Najeeb, and Ismail Habeeb.
