The construction of Muli Airport in Meemu Atoll is nearing completion, with final touches being made to terminal buildings and other facilities, the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has confirmed.

The project, which began in early 2022, aims to improve domestic connectivity for Meemu Atoll, one of the few atolls in the Maldives without an airport.

MTCC has confirmed that 85 per cent of the construction work on Muli Airport is complete, including the 1,200-metre-long and 30-metre-wide runway. Dredging and land reclamation around the runway are also nearing completion, with 90 per cent of the work finalised. Meanwhile, the procurement of essential terminal equipment and other finishing touches has been identified as a top priority for the remaining stages.

The project, valued at MVR 221 million, is expected to be ready within two months, with a test flight planned to assess the runway. Once operational, the airport will cater to domestic flights, providing vital connectivity for the atoll’s eight inhabited islands and its population of under 8,000.
