A cargo vessel transporting Ramadan supplies to the islands of Nilandhoo and Dhaandhoo in Gaafu Alifu Atoll ran aground on Ekefaru reef, resulting in the loss of hundreds of food supplies into the sea.

The Leo Wing was carrying over 1,070 gunny bags of rice, flour, and sugar for households on the two islands.

The delivery was organised by Leo Trading’s Chairperson, Abdulla Sawaad, a native of Nilandhoo, as part of a charitable initiative to support the community during Ramadan.

The Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council confirmed the vessel struck the reef, causing the cargo to spill into the water.

Efforts to refloat the vessel are currently underway, according to a company representative, but there are no updates yet on the recovery of the lost goods.
