Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare Maryam Mariya attended the launch of the Maldives Wetland Foundation's sustainable coir-based brand, showcasing products crafted by women who rely on mangrove resources for their livelihoods.

During the event, she unveiled the Foundation's research study titled "Socio Economic Importance of Mangroves for Women's Livelihood in the Maldives."

The launch ceremony, held at the Meeruma Hotel, introduced a new brand highlighting women's craftsmanship in coir production and jewellery making. The event featured an exhibition of jewellery pieces crafted by graduates of a training programme specialising in coir ornaments.

Women play a vital role in sustaining island economies through coir production and other activities connected to mangroves and lagoon ecosystems; however, their potential is often constrained by limited market access, high operational costs and a lack of formal education. Providing official recognition and support is crucial for empowering these women and fostering sustainable, equitable livelihoods.

Whilst coir has historically been produced and used for various purposes in the Maldives, efforts to develop these traditional crafts have been limited. The introduction of this new brand creates promising opportunities, particularly as the nation strives to increase domestic production and achieve greater economic empowerment.
