President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has inaugurated the nationwide Magey Solar programme in Haa Alifu Filladhoo today, marking a significant step towards renewable energy adoption.
The programme offers 3kW and 5kW solar systems, priced at MVR 45,000 and MVR 75,000 respectively, with options for full payment or five-year instalments. Currently available to Fenaka Corporation customers, the initiative will extend to STELCO-serviced regions.
Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim confirmed that 750 solar systems have been secured for the first phase.
"At our first installation site, the new 3kW system should reduce their electricity costs to zero," he said.
The initiative aims to achieve the Government's target of 33 per cent renewable energy in the national power mix by 2028.
During his visit, President Dr Muizzu also announced road modernisation plans for Filladhoo and revealed that the northern four atolls have been designated as an Integrated Development Zone, focusing on tourism expansion, fisheries diversification, and mariculture initiatives.
