President Dr Mohamed Muizzu held a meeting with the Utheemu Island Council, the Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and institutional leaders to discuss and prioritise the island’s key development concerns. The meeting, which took place at the Secretariat of the Utheemu Council, focused on urgent issues impacting the island’s growth and heritage preservation.

One of the primary concerns raised was coastal erosion, which poses a significant threat to Utheemu’s shores. The Council also highlighted the challenges in allocating land while preserving the island’s historic identity and requested that a nearby island be brought under Utheemu’s jurisdiction.

The need for better healthcare services was another critical point, with calls to upgrade the island’s health centre. Establishing a waste management facility was also identified as a pressing necessity to address environmental concerns.

Additionally, the Council expressed deep concern over the condition of the heritage flag at Utheemu Ganduvaru and the lack of proper preservation efforts for this historically significant site.

President Dr Muizzu assured the Council and WDC members that their concerns would be thoroughly reviewed, with steps taken to address them. He reaffirmed his Administration’s commitment to meeting the needs of local communities while preserving the nation’s heritage.

Ministers accompanying the President provided updates on ongoing and planned projects designed to enhance the island’s infrastructure and services. These include measures to mitigate coastal erosion, improve waste management, and strengthen public facilities.
